Kipchoge Conquers Tokyo Marathon, Solidifying His Legacy
Eliud Kipchoge, the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder in the marathon, triumphed at the Tokyo Marathon on Sunday, clocking an impressive 2:02:40. While he fell short of shattering his own world record of 2:01:39 set in Berlin in 2019, his performance cemented his status as a legend in the sport.
This victory marks Kipchoge’s third time achieving one of the four fastest marathon times in history, further solidifying his position as the greatest marathoner of all time.
The race wasn’t without its challenges. At the 10-kilometer mark, Kipchoge and the lead pack took a wrong turn, costing them valuable seconds and disrupting their rhythm as they corrected course.
Despite this setback, Kipchoge surged ahead of his compatriot, Amos Kiprut, around the 35-kilometer mark, ultimately crossing the finish line alone.
Kipchoge’s triumph in Tokyo comes a year after he successfully defended his Olympic title at the 2021 Tokyo Games, held in Sapporo. “I am overjoyed to be back in Japan, especially after my Olympic victory last year,” he shared. “The Japanese fans are incredible, their support is truly inspiring. That’s why I always push myself harder when I race here.”
Beyond his personal achievement, Kipchoge used his platform to advocate for unity amidst global tensions. “In the face of conflict and division, let’s choose dialog over violence,” he urged.
Amos Kiprut, the 2019 Doha World Championship bronze medalist, secured second place with a time of 2:03:13.
This victory marked Kipchoge’s debut in Tokyo, adding another prestigious marathon to his list of conquests. He has already triumphed in London, Chicago, and Berlin, and aims to conquer all six World Marathon Majors, which also include New York, Boston, and Tokyo.
“I’m incredibly proud to have won four of the six major marathons,” Kipchoge stated.
Looking ahead, Kipchoge has set his sights on an unprecedented third consecutive Olympic gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games.
In the women’s race, Brigid kosgei, another Kenyan world record holder, dominated the field, finishing in a remarkable 2:16:02.
