A Journey Through Austrian Football: The Coaching Career of Klaus Schmidt
Klaus Schmidt, born on October 21, 1967, boasts a rich adn diverse coaching career spanning over two decades. His journey began in Styria, where he honed his skills as an assistant coach from 2000 to 2007, culminating in a championship victory with the esteemed club in 2004.
Schmidt’s ambition led him to explore new horizons, taking on assistant coaching roles at Austria Carinthia (2007/08) and Wiener Neustadt (2008/09).He then answered the call of renowned coach Josef Hickersberger, venturing into the Middle East. Schmidt’s international experience included serving as assistant coach for the Bahrain national team and later for Al Wahda in Abu Dhabi.
In 2012, Schmidt returned to Austria, joining the ÖFB as an assistant coach for the U-21 national team. This experience paved the way for his first head coaching position in the spring of 2013 with Kapfenberg SV in the second division.
Schmidt’s coaching prowess continued to shine as he led Austria Salzburg for six months before taking the helm at Wacker Innsbruck in the fall of 2014. His career trajectory saw him guide Blau-Weiß Linz (2016/17), followed by single-season stints at Altach and Mattersburg.
From September 2019 to February 2020, Schmidt took charge of Admira, successfully navigating the team through a relegation battle. Despite his heroics, the club parted ways with Schmidt after a year-long hiatus, during which he was briefly reactivated to secure their top-flight status.
