Leylah Annie Fernandez will lead Canada to the Billie Jean King Cup

Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez will be the cornerstone of the Canadian team that will take part in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers against Latvia, on April 15 and 16 in Vancouver.

Tennis Canada announced its roster on Monday in a press release.

In addition to the 19-year-old Lavalloise, Rebecca Marino, Gabriela Dabrowski, Françoise Abanda and Carol Zhao will defend the colors of the country.

“I’m very happy to be in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier this year,” Fernandez said. I always have a lot of fun taking part in these tournaments and I am delighted to finally be able to play at home. Wearing Canada’s colors on the field is an honor and I can’t wait to do it in front of a Canadian audience. »

Last Sunday, Fernandez showed all his resilience erasing no less than five championship balls before lifting the Monterrey tournament trophy again, for a second consecutive year.

The 21st player in the world joins the Canadian team for the fourth time in her career. She has won her last three duels in this international competition.

It will also be the first time that Canada and Latvia will meet. The Maple Leaf currently sits ninth in the Billie Jean King Cup standings, while Latvia is 14th. The winners of this meeting will qualify for the Finals next November.
