Maaseik records a hard-fought win in the play-offs against unexpected opponent Gent | volley-ball

Roeselare seemed to close the competition as leader and thus avoid the treacherous Ghent, the brand new cup winner. But on the final day of play, Roeselare lost at home to Maaseik, which meant that it still lost the lead.

Roeselare decided to file a complaint about a match from 2 months ago. In the match between Maaseik and Haasrode Leuven, the Limburgers had drafted the Est Vanker, who was not eligible to play.

The federation rejected Roeselare’s complaint, but the federal prosecutor’s office agreed with the West Flemish people. As a result, Roeselare avoids Ghent and Maaseik had to get on the bus to Ghent at the last minute.

Instead of a hangover from the cup win, they had clearly received a boost there. Gent won the first set, lost the next two, but still forced a tiebreak. In that 5th set, Ghent seemed to run away with it, but perhaps spurred on by the events of the past few days, Maaseik was able to turn the tide (12-15).

Maaseik can finish it against Ghent next Wednesday. Then it also has the home advantage.
