Dozens of people have been injured in heavy football riots in a Mexican stadium. Some sources even speak of 17 dead, but those numbers have not been confirmed by the local authorities.
Things went wrong during the league match between Querétaro FC and Atlas Fútbol Club. Images show that fans suddenly attack each other in the stands after a goal by Atlas in the second half. Spectators fled the field of Estadio La Corregidora as rival hooligans chase each other with sticks. There was also fighting on the field and outside the stadium.
Puddle of blood
Videos are circulated on social media of fans lying motionless in the stands, some in a pool of blood. Authorities say at least 22 people have been injured, but there have been no reports of deaths.
Both clubs have a fanatical following. Fans of the white roosters (white roosters) and Atlas’s, Foxes (the foxes), seek each other more often to fight. The Mexican Football Association has temporarily suspended the national competition in solidarity with the victims. In four years’ time, Mexico, the United States and Canada will host the World Cup.
