A Bond Forged in Adversity: Reflecting on 28 Years with My Partner

This marks the end of my column. As I bid farewell, I want to dedicate this final piece to my partner, Shigeo Takahashi. Our journey began in high school, where he was a junior in the judo club. Now, the roles have reversed, but the bond we forged remains strong.

Over the past 28 years, countless experiences have shaped our partnership. Some stand out as particularly vivid reminders of our shared journey.

One such memory takes us to a frigid winter day, miles out at sea.We were filming a segment related to fishermenS work when my partner, usually a voracious eater, complained of a sudden stomachache. Stranded on a small boat, returning to shore was impossible. The icy waters threatened to engulf us if we lost our balance. in that moment of crisis, he clung to me, and I held him tight, ensuring we both weathered the storm.

Another unforgettable experience involved a ferocious dog. The director, in a risky move, instructed me to enter the dog’s cage with only a towel protecting my rear. It was a terrifying prospect, offering minimal defense.

As I hesitantly approached the cage, driven by hunger pangs, my partner intervened. “The dog doesn’t always bite the butt,” he wisely pointed out.His quick thinking saved me from potential harm. We opted to feed and calm the dog before I entered the cage, successfully completing the shoot. Even now, I shudder to think what might have happened had he not stopped me.

While our partnership has been marked by incredible camaraderie, there have been moments that tested our bond.

Once, after a night of heavy drinking at a senior’s house, I fell ill. My partner, ever the loyal friend, woke up during our taxi ride home and began searching for my belongings. When he located my luggage, he rushed to my side, addressing me with a heartfelt “brother.” his compassion and care touched me deeply. To my readers, thank you for accompanying me on this journey for the past two years and four months. Your support has meant the world to me.

And to our Brazilian audience, I extend a special greeting: Can you hear everyone reading the Tokyo Shimbun? Thank you!

This is Masumi Yagi, signing off.

Next time, Kei yamazaki will be taking over the column, sharing his own unique viewpoint.

Facing the Wild: an Interview with Judo Champion Shigeo Takahashi

Today, we have a true icon of the Japanese sporting world with us: shigeo Takahashi, renowned Judo champion and lifelong partner to sports journalist Masumi Yagi.Shigeo, welcome to the show! Your resilience and support, as depicted in Masumi’s heartwarming farewell column, have truly inspired me. Let’s delve into some of those incredible experiences.

Masumi recounts a harrowing fishing helm experience were you, unexpectedly struck by stomach cramps, relied on him for support in risky conditions. How did your years of Judo training prepare you for such an unexpected challenge, both physically and mentally?

Shigeo Takahashi: Thank you for having me. Judo instilled in me discipline, mental fortitude, and a deep understanding of balance — vital not just on the mat but in navigating life’s unforeseen storms. While physically unprepared for the seasickness, the mental discipline honed through years of training helped me remain calm and trust Masumi. It’s a testament to the lasting impact Judo has on both body and mind.

Masumi also described an encounter with an aggressive dog during a shoot where your quick thinking saved him from potential harm. Do you think this type of improvisation is a skill cultivated through your sport?

Shigeo Takahashi: Absolutely. Judo is all about adapting to your opponent’s moves, thinking strategically, and reacting swiftly. While facing a snarling dog is entirely different from a Judo match, the same principles apply: assess the situation, find an opening, and act decisively.

In the article, Masumi portrays a strong bond built on shared experiences, mutual respect, and unwavering loyalty. Can you elaborate on how your journey in Judo,a sport deeply rooted in values like respect and discipline, has influenced your relationship?

Shigeo Takahashi: Judo has undoubtedly shaped our friendship. It taught us the importance of mutual respect, trust, and supporting each other through thick and thin. The discipline ingrained in us through training has translated into how we navigate challenges and celebrate successes together.

Looking back at your decades-long partnership, are there any specific Judo principles or philosophies that have been particularly influential in navigating the highs and lows you’ve experienced?

Shigeo takahashi: One key principle is “seiryoku zenyo,” maximizing efficiency of movement. This transcends the mat, teaching us to utilize our strengths and work together effectively to overcome any obstacle. We learned to anticipate each other’s needs, offer support when required, and celebrate each other’s victories.

Masumi’s stories about your unwavering support, especially during challenging times like his illness after a night of celebrating, Sicherheit beautifully illustrate the profound impact of genuine friendship. What advice would you give to young athletes about building strong, supportive relationships within their sports communities?

Shigeo Takahashi: Value the connections you forge. In Judo, we are more then just competitors; we are a community bound by shared values and a passion for the sport. Nurture these relationships, support each other both on and off the mat, and celebrate each other’s triumphs. These connections will serve you well throughout life.

Thank you, Shigeo, for sharing your insights and experiences. Your story is a powerful reminder of the enduring power of friendship and the invaluable lessons learned through sports.
