Meškov (rating – 2561) defeated the international master from Austria Georg Kilguss (2415) by playing with white figures.
Meškovs is numbered 75 in the tournament, but his opponent is number 150.
After two rounds, the Latvian grandmaster with two points ranks 32nd among 317 chess players.
The third round will take place on Tuesday.
The tournament will be played in 11 rounds with a reflection time of 90 minutes for each of the first 40 moves of the chess players plus 30 minutes until the end of the game with the addition of 30 seconds for each move from the first.
The tournament is scheduled to end on April 6.
The prize pool is € 100,000, of which the winner will receive € 20,000. The top 20 players will enter the 2023 World Cup, one of the stages in the World Championship cycle.
Meškovs is the only representative of Latvia in this championship.
Three years ago, he reached the top position out of four domestic chess players, ranking 45th. In 2016, Grandmaster Igor Kovalenko won a silver medal.
