Breaking Barriers: Elizabeth Benn Joins the Mets Front Office
Elizabeth Benn’s journey from baseball enthusiast to the highest-ranking woman in the New York Mets’ baseball operations department is a testament to her dedication and talent. Joining the team on Monday, Benn brings a wealth of experience from her five-year tenure at Major League Baseball, most recently as the senior baseball operations coordinator.Benn’s responsibilities with the Mets will be multifaceted, encompassing roster construction, management, and player transactions. She will collaborate closely with General Manager Billy Eppler, his three assistant general managers (bryn Alderson, Ian Levin, and Ben Zauzmer), and the entire baseball operations staff.
“My focus will be on all aspects related to major league players and personnel,” Benn explained.This includes managing the major league payroll, negotiating coaching contracts, overseeing the performance staff, and handling clubhouse and travel logistics.
Growing up a Yankees fan in Toronto, Benn drew inspiration from trailblazers like Jean Afterman, assistant general manager of the yankees, and kim Ng, general manager of the Miami Marlins, with whom she worked at MLB. Recognizing the significance of her role, Benn expressed her commitment to excellence.
“I understand that people are watching and looking up to me,” she stated. “My goal is to perform at the highest level,not because of my gender or being the first woman in this position with the Mets,but because that’s how I approach my work.”
Benn’s path to the Mets front office is especially noteworthy. As a former pitcher, she made history as the first woman to play in the New York City Metro Baseball League. Now,she embarks on a new chapter,carving her own legacy within the Mets association.
The prospect to join the Mets was a perfect fit for Benn. “I had considered moving to a club from the commissioner’s office at some point,” she shared. “While I didn’t expect it to happen so soon, this opportunity ticked all the boxes. speaking with Billy Eppler initially,I couldn’t imagine a better GM to work for. His leadership is remarkable, and the team and front office are truly impressive. I’m incredibly excited to be a part of it.”

That’s a great point,david. Now, Elizabeth mentioned being inspired by women like jean afterman and Kim Ng. Did you have any female mentors or role models during your career?
David Wright: Honestly, the women who most impacted my life weren’t necessarily in baseball. It was my mother,my sister,and other strong women in my life who taught me the importance of hard work,resilience,and determination. Those values are applicable on and off the field.

David Wright: Absolutely. In baseball, you’re judged by your performance, plain and simple.
