Xochitepec Welcomes Mexican Wheelchair Basketball Team with Open Arms
The Mexican Under-23 Wheelchair Basketball Team has found a welcoming home in xochitepec as they prepare for the upcoming Pan American Championships. The city council has gone above and beyond to ensure the team has everything they need to succeed, providing access to top-notch facilities, nutritious meals, and reliable transportation.
Since arriving, the twelve athletes have been diligently training at the DIF Xochitepec facilities, utilizing the multipurpose court for both morning and evening sessions. Fernando Sebastián Galván Castillo, a player from León, Guanajuato, expressed his gratitude for the exceptional support, stating, “I feel vrey good. Xochitepec is truly committed to sports, especially wheelchair basketball.The service, food, and overall experience have been fantastic.”
The warm climate of Xochitepec, mirroring that of Quintana Roo, has proven beneficial for the team’s physical conditioning.their rigorous training regimen, focused on anaerobic preparation, is designed to optimize their performance at the Pan American Championships, scheduled to take place in Playa del Carmen from March 8th to 12th.
Under the guidance of their coaches, Adrián Figueroa and Vianey Carrillo, the athletes from across Mexico have been honing their skills, focusing on coordination, strength training, and perfecting their three-point shots.
The team will continue their training in Xochitepec until friday, when they will undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing at the Fidel Velázquez in Cuernavaca. Their journey will culminate with a trip to Playa del Carmen on Saturday,where they will compete for a coveted spot in the Wheelchair basketball World Championship,to be held in Japan later this year.
The Pan American Championships will be a fierce competition, with the Mexican team facing off against strong contenders from the United States, Canada, and Brazil. The stakes are high, as the top two teams will secure their place on the world stage.
