Mexico’s elite Archers Aim for san Salvador 2023 Qualification
Mexico’s top female archers have secured their spots in the upcoming First Qualifier for the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games. The team, comprised of Alejandra Valencia Trujillo, Ana Paula Vázquez Flores, and Aída Román Arroyo, will be joined by reserve Valentina Vázquez Cadena.
This talented quartet earned their places after a fierce competition at the National Selective Archery Control held at the National Centre for progress and Sports Talents and High Performance (CNAR). The event, which showcased the nation’s seven best archers, saw Valencia, Román, and Vázquez claim the top three spots.
The team’s impressive credentials speak volumes about their potential.Alejandra Valencia, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, brings a wealth of experience to the team. Aída Román, who secured a silver medal at the london 2012 Olympics, adds further firepower. Ana Paula Vázquez,a gold medalist at the Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games,rounds out this formidable trio.
Their sights are set on Bayamón, Puerto Rico, where the First Qualifier will take place from March 14 to 20. The Mexican team departs on march 12, aiming to secure all 12 available spots for the San Salvador 2023 Games.
Santiago Avitia,president of the Mexican Archery Federation,highlighted the team’s ambition: “Our goal in Bayamón is to qualify the entire men’s and women’s recurve teams,and also the men’s and women’s compound teams. We anticipate strong competition from Colombia and athletes from El Salvador, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala, but Mexico and Colombia are the teams to beat.”
The compound bow team will begin their training at the CNAR on March 7, joining the recurve team in their final preparations for the international competition.

Welcome back to Archery Focus, folks! Today, we have a real treat. Joining us is none othre than legendary archer,a silver medalist at the 2012 London Olympics,and a crucial member of the Mexican archery team,Aída Román Arroyo. Welcome Aida!
Aída: Thank you so much for having me. I’m excited to be here.
Moderator: Aida, you’re part of a formidable team heading to the First Qualifier for the San Salvador 2023 Central american and Caribbean Games. This squad boasts Olympic and Games experience, with Alejandra Valencia and Ana paula Vázquez also on the roster. how do you feel about your team’s chances?
Aída: I’m incredibly confident about our team. we have a remarkable mix of experience and youthful energy. Alejandra brings her Olympic experience, Ana Paula has proven herself at the Games level, and Valentina [Vázquez Cadena] is a super talented reserve. Our combined skills and determination make us a force to be reckoned with.
Moderator: Speaking of experience, you’ve been a mainstay on the international archery scene for years now. How has the sport changed since you first started, and how has your approach evolved over time?
Aída: Archery has become incredibly more competitive over the years. The level of precision and mental focus required is astounding. Early in my career, I relied heavily on instinct and raw talent. But over time, I’ve learned the importance of meticulous technique, rigorous training regimens, and most importantly, unwavering mental strength.
Moderator: The First Qualifier is shaping up to be a tough fight with strong competition from Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala. What are your thoughts on these rivals, and what are Mexico’s strategies going into this crucial event?
Aída: obviously, Colombia is a major contender. Thay have a strong archery tradition and some phenomenal archers. But we respect all our opponents,we study their styles,and we prepare meticulously. We’re aiming to qualify both the men’s and women’s recurve and compound teams for San Salvador.
Moderator: That’s an ambitious goal! What do you think will be the most crucial factors in achieving success at the First Qualifier?
Aída: Consistency will be key. Every shot matters. We need to maintain our focus, stay calm under pressure, and execute our shots with precision. Additionally, strong teamwork and mutual support will be essential to navigate the demands of this intense competition.
Moderator: We saw your notable performance at the National Selective Archery Control, where you secured a top three spot. What was your mindset going into that competition, and what are your key takeaways from that experience?
Aída: Going into the National Selective Archery control, I focused on sharpening my technique, building mental resilience, and visualizing success. I knew the competition would be fierce, but I was determined to secure my spot on the team. The experience was invaluable, confirming our team’s strength and showcasing the depth of talent within Mexican archery.
Moderator: You’ve had an incredible career, Aída, with accolades like your Olympic silver medal and numerous international victories.Who are some of your biggest inspirations in the world of archery,and what advice would you give to aspiring young archers?
Aída: My biggest inspiration has always been my father,who introduced me to the sport and instilled in me a passion for precision and dedication. On the international stage, I admire archers like Korea’s Ki Bo Bae and the USA’s Brady Ellison for their unwavering focus and consistent excellence. To aspiring archers, I say: embrace the journey, strive for progress, not perfection. Believe in yourself, work hard, and never give up on your dreams.
