Lautaro Midón (17 years old) had a strong and unprecedented start to the year. He played his first Grand Slam tournament by taking part in the Junior Australian Open and then returned to South America to take part in two major tournaments in Brazil.
“I came for a week to rest, to be calm, but this possibility arose to do the exhibition and the clinic with the boys, which also served to help the people who fought against the fires in Corrientes,” Midón said that yesterday, at the school The “Antonio Martínez” tennis club that works at Club San Martín shared part of his experience with young tennis players.
The day was supportive given that the attendees had to attend with some element that will be distributed among the volunteer firefighters.
Midón, who in 2021 added his first points on the professional circuit by disputing the classification of a challenger, maintained that for the remainder of the season “the idea is to keep going, play the most important tournaments in juniors and start little by little. to play the professional tournaments to arrive next year with more experience”.
According to his view, to make the leap, “everything is in the head, of course there is a difference in the game, such as in the speed of the ball, in the serve, the returns and the key moments of each game, but a lot happens because of the mentality,” he said.
2021 will mark a before and after in Midón’s career. He was the protagonist of the Australian Open Juniors. Thus he recounted his passage through the Grand Slam that he opens every year: “It was a very beautiful and unique experience. He had never played a Grand Slam. It was the first and it was an inexplicable thing. It went well for me, although I would have liked to have finished better, but I don’t know what happened to me”.
In the third round of the Australian contest, the man from Corrientes lost to Bruno Kuzuhara (No. 2 in the world) 6-4, 6-1.
“I’m never satisfied until I’m with the trophy. I am someone who does not stop and always wants more. But for my first time in a Grand Slam, it went quite well for me, although I was left with the feeling that I could have won the last match”, acknowledged the player who is now in 20th place in the ITF ranking.
Later, during the month of February, he played two tournaments in Brazil, always in the youth category, where he reached the quarterfinals.
“In Porto Alegre I don’t know what happened to me. I tried to play, I entered the court but I was very ill, with a headache and vomiting, and I had to leave the game” where he faced the Korean Gerard Campana.
“In the second (it was played in Criciuma) I was fine but I fell against the Peruvian Gonzalo Bueno who is playing very well”.
Then he landed in Corrientes where he recharged energy with his family and friends, but “this Sunday he traveled to Buenos Aires where I am going to train for three weeks. Then there are two weeks of tournaments that I am defining which one I am going to play. Futures in Rosario or a juniors tournament in Peru”.
Once again installed in Buenos Aires, “I’m going to do a preseason, to get strong, for the tour of Europe where the Roland Garros and Wimbledon competitions stand out,” he concluded.
