Schalke 04 Appoints Büskens as Interim Head Coach
In a move aimed at securing their return to the Bundesliga, Schalke 04 has appointed Mike Büskens as their interim head coach. The 53-year-old, who previously served as assistant coach, will take the reins until the end of the season, replacing Dimitrios Grammozis.
Schalke’s sporting director, Rouven Schroeder, expressed confidence in Büskens’ ability to guide the team through the crucial final phase of the season.”We are delighted that Mike Büskens has agreed to step up and support the club during this critical period,” Schroeder stated. “We firmly believe that Buyo is the right person to lead us back to the top flight.”
Büskens, who spent 25 years under the tutelage of legendary coach Huub Stevens, shared his decision-making process. “When Rouven approached me with the club’s request on Sunday, I consulted with my family and Huub Stevens,” Büskens revealed. “Everyone encouraged me to accept this challenge and help the team achieve its goals.”
Currently sitting sixth in the table,Schalke 04 trails the promotion spots by six points with nine games remaining. Büskens’ immediate focus will be on guiding the team to victory and closing the gap.
Though, Büskens’ first task will be to recover from a recent positive COVID-19 test. While asymptomatic, he will be unable to lead training sessions initially. Assistant coach Matthias Kreutzer will take charge of training duties until Büskens is cleared to return.

Stefan: Stevens is a brilliant tactician who knows German football inside out. His guidance will be invaluable. But ultimately, the duty rests on Büskens’ shoulders to translate that advice into results on the pitch.
