Too unpack the impact of this setback and what it means for the team moving forward, I’m joined by German football legend and former FIFA World Player of the Year, lothar Matthäus.
Welcome, Lothar.
Lothar Matthäus: Thanks for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss German football.
Moderator: Lothar, given Moukoko’s age and potential, how critically important is this injury for his growth?
Lothar Matthäus: This is undoubtedly a frustrating setback for the young man. At 17, Moukoko needs consistent playing time to hone his skills and gain experience. Missing several weeks will disrupt his progress, but it’s also critically important to remember that these things happen in football. It’s how he recovers and comes back stronger that matters.
Moderator: Some might say this injury creates an opportunity for other young players within the Dortmund squad to step up. What do you think?
Lothar Matthäus: Absolutely.Lucien Favre now has a chance to test the depth of his squad and give other promising talents the opportunity to shine.Players like Steffen Tigges or even ansgar Knauff might get their opportunity to prove themselves. Whether they can grasp it is another matter entirely, but adversity often breeds opportunity.
Moderator: Dortmund’s attacking options have been depleted. Do you believe they can still challenge for the Bundesliga title this season?
Lothar Matthäus: It will be incredibly challenging. Bayern Munich are the clear favorites, and without Haaland and now Moukoko, Dortmund’s attacking firepower has been significantly reduced. They’ll need to rely heavily on the creativity of Marco Reus and jude Bellingham to create chances. It’s a tall order, but Dortmund have shown resilience before. they can’t be discounted entirely.
Moderator: You’ve played at the highest level, Lothar. What advice would you give Moukoko as he navigates this injury and his recovery?
Lothar Matthäus: The most important thing for Youssoufa is to focus on his rehabilitation. He needs to listen to the medical staff, work hard, and be patient. It’s a long season, and he’ll have plenty of opportunities to return stronger and make a real impact for Dortmund.
Moderator: Fans are divided on whether Dortmund should prioritize the Bundesliga or the Champions League this season given their weakened squad. What’s your view?
Lothar Matthäus: While the Champions League is a prestigious competition, the Bundesliga title should be the priority.Winning a domestic league title is a testament to consistency and strength throughout the season.
Moderator: Great insights, Lothar. Thank You for your time.
Lothar Matthäus: My pleasure.
