Chiesa pointed to a pivotal moment in the 27th minute of the first half. Following a goal kick by Bologna’s Skorupski, torino’s Medel inexplicably handled the ball, preventing it from reaching a Torino attacker. Despite the clear handball, referee Massimi failed to award a penalty, a decision Chiesa deemed “sensational” and a clear error in judgment. This oversight proved costly for Torino, who were denied a golden opportunity to take the lead.

Was This the Worst Officiating Blunder in Serie A? Former Striker Francesco Totti Weighs In

Bologna and Torino’s mid-week clash finished in a goalless draw, but officiating controversy overshadowed the final whistle. Former international referee Massimo Chiesa publicly criticized referee alessandro Massimi for a missed penalty call, igniting a heated debate amongst fans and pundits. We sat down with legendary Italian forward Francesco Totti, now retired but always insightful, to dissect this controversial decision.

[Interviewer]: Francesco,Chiesa claimed referee Massimi made a “sensational” error in failing to award Torino a penalty after Gary Medel handled the ball in the box during Bologna’s goal kick. What are your thoughts on this call?

[totti]: Look, I’ve seen a lot of football in my time, and even with the benefit of replays, sometimes these decisions are incredibly arduous for referees to make in real-time. But this one seems pretty clear-cut to me. Medel reacted instinctively, maybe, but his arm was clearly outstretched, and it prevented the ball from reaching a Torino attacker who was in a great position. That’s a penalty all day long.

[Interviewer]: Chiesa believes this missed call “substantially altered the game’s trajectory”. Do you agree?

[Totti]: Objectively, yes. A penalty at that stage of the game, especially with Torino pressing for a win, would have entirely changed the dynamic. The momentum would have shifted considerably. Torino, and Medel specifically, felt hard done by. It’s Subsection a tough pill to swallow when you feel the refereeing directly impacted the result.

[Interviewer]: Ther’s a constant debate about VAR’s involvement in these types of situations. Do you think VAR could have prevented this mistake?

[Totti]: honestly,I think VAR should have intervened here. We’ve seen it correct far less clear handball calls, and this one was blatant. It’s frustrating when technology is available to help referees make the right call, yet it isn’t utilized. It begs the question: what’s the point of having VAR if it’s not going to be used in obvious situations like this?

[Interviewer]: This isn’t the first time officiating has been called into question in Serie A this season. Do you think there’s a broader issue with the standard of refereeing in the league?

[Totti]: I wouldn’t say there’s a crisis, but there are certainly some inconsistencies. Refereeing is a tough job,and mistakes happen. However, we need a higher level of accuracy and consistency, especially in a league as competitive as Serie A.

We appreciate Francesco Totti’s insights on this controversial penalty call. What are your thoughts on this situation, fans? Was it indeed a “sensational” error, as chiesa claims? Should VAR have intervened?
