Qatari Media Mogul Faces Appeal in Swiss Court Over World Cup Rights
Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, the influential head of Paris Saint-Germain and BeIN Media group, is set to return to the Swiss Federal Criminal Court in bellinzona for an appeal hearing.the case, which centers around the awarding of television rights for the 2026 and 2030 FIFA World Cups, has been closely watched by the international sports community.
al-khelaïfi, 48, was initially acquitted in 2020 of charges related to “aggravated unfair management instigation.” Though, the Swiss Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPC) appealed the decision, leading to this upcoming trial scheduled for March 7-10.
Joining Al-Khelaïfi in the appeal is Jérôme Valcke, the former secretary general of FIFA. Valcke, 61, was also acquitted in 2020 of similar charges. The MPC alleges that Al-Khelaïfi provided Valcke with benefits worth millions of euros, including the use of a luxury villa in Sardinia, in exchange for favorable treatment in securing media rights for BeIN sports.
The prosecution’s initial case rested on the premise that Al-Khelaïfi, through these alleged benefits, influenced Valcke to ensure that Qatari groups, including Al-Jazeera and bein Media Group, secured lucrative broadcasting rights for the Middle East and North Africa. A contract worth $480 million (approximately €432 million) was signed in April 2014, granting these rights to the Qatari entities.
While the TPF initially ruled that FIFA could not have secured more favorable contracts, the MPC maintains that the arrangement constituted a corrupt deal. The MPC’s appeal highlights the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the awarding of major sporting events’ broadcasting rights and the potential for conflicts of interest.
This case is especially significant given the immense financial stakes involved in broadcasting rights for events like the FIFA World Cup. The global audience and advertising revenue associated with these tournaments make them highly coveted by media companies worldwide.
The outcome of the appeal could have far-reaching implications for the future of sports broadcasting rights negotiations and the transparency surrounding such deals.

mia Hamm: It’s deeply concerning. Any instance of corruption in sports is a betrayal of fans, athletes, and the integrity of the game itself. If these allegations are proven true, it casts a shadow over the beautiful game.

The prosecution claims that Al-Khelaïfi provided lavish benefits to former FIFA Secretary General Jérôme Valcke in exchange for favorable treatment in awarding those rights to BeIN Sports. How do you see this impacting the trust between governing bodies, media companies, and the public?
Mia Hamm: Clarity is paramount. Right now, trust is already waning in FIFA after previous scandals, and this case only intensifies those concerns. If media companies are seen as wielding undue influence through questionable practices,it undermines the entire system.
Moderator:
You mentioned scandals. This isn’t the first time FIFA has been embroiled in controversy. How do you think this case compares to previous scandals like the 2015 FIFA corruption case?
Mia Hamm: It echoes the same pattern of shady dealings behind closed doors. The sheer amount of money involved in broadcasting rights creates a fertile ground for corruption. We need robust mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the bidding process.
Moderator:
What kind of reforms would you like to see implemented to prevent such situations from happening again?
Mia Hamm: Stronger ethical guidelines and independent oversight committees are essential. We need stricter consequences for those found guilty of corruption, and a system that prioritizes the long-term interests of the sport over short-term financial gain.
