Will Borussia Dortmund’s top defender Mats Hummels (33) make a comeback in the National team?
For record national player Lothar Matthäus (61) a perfectly conceivable scenario. “With his quality, it must always be expected that he will come back,” writes the TV expert in his “Sky” column.
However, Matthäus sees other players in the DFB defense at the moment: “In central defence, I think that, despite Schlotterbeck’s great performance, Niklas Süle and Antonio Rüdiger are still a little ahead. Both are or were Champions League winners and regular players at a really big club. Freiburg is a different number there.”
Süle, Rüdiger, Schlotterbeck and then Hummels? Matthäus explains: “Mats Hummels is currently falling behind a bit. Especially when you consider that Hansi Flick, like Bayern, lets you press high, wants to win the ball quickly and generally needs players who have speed. The pace isn’t Mats’ greatest strength anymore, and unfortunately he was injured for a long time.”
Matthew’s verdict is therefore: “As of now, I don’t see him in the team.”
Ex-Bayern star Mario Basler (53) explained in “Doppelpass” on Sunday that “Mats’ time internationally is over. I don’t think you should be bothering about him coming back. It was decided that he would no longer be there.”
Matthäus does not want to go that far, but at the same time praises the rejuvenation of the DFB team. Two debutants got their chance in the 2-0 win over Israel. “You have to say that the many young guys did a really great job. What Nico Schlotterbeck and David Raum showed, especially in forward gear, was simply strong,” analyzed the “Sky” expert.
BVB star Hummels still has some time until the winter World Cup to play himself back into the focus of the national team.
