Moderator: Welcome, everyone, to another edition of courtside Conversations! Today, we’re honored to have NBA legend and Celtics icon Kevin Garnett joining us. KG, thank you for taking the time to chat with us.
Kevin Garnett: Thank you for having me. It’s always great to connect with fans and talk about the game I love.
Moderator: Let’s dive right in. your jersey retirement ceremony with the Celtics was a historic moment. What did it mean to you to see your number 5 raised to the rafters alongside other Celtics greats?
Kevin Garnett: Man, it was surreal. Boston is a special place for me. The fans, the history, the legacy—it’s unmatched. To be up there with legends like Bill russell, Larry Bird, and Paul Pierce… it’s humbling. It’s not just about the number; it’s about the journey, the battles, and the brotherhood.
Moderator: Speaking of brotherhood, Ray Allen was there too. The two of you had your differences in the past. How did it feel to share that moment with him?
Kevin Garnett: (laughs) Time heals a lot of things. at the end of the day,we’re family. What we accomplished together in 2008—that bond doesn’t just disappear. It was good to see him, to celebrate what we built. Basketball is bigger than any disagreements.
Moderator: let’s shift gears to the current NBA season. The Celtics’ five-game winning streak was snapped by the Mavericks. What did you make of that game?
Kevin Garnett: Dallas came to play, there’s no doubt whatsoever. Luka Dončić is a problem for any team. But I think the Celtics got a little complacent. You can’t take your foot off the gas in this league. They’ll bounce back, though. This team has the talent and the grit to make noise in the playoffs.
moderator: Speaking of the playoffs, the Nets are looking strong despite Kyrie Irving’s limited availability. Kevin Durant has been carrying the load. What’s your take on his performance this season?
Kevin Garnett: KD is a generational talent. What he’s doing at his age, coming off an Achilles injury, is unbelievable. He’s not just scoring; he’s facilitating,rebounding,and leading. If Kyrie can get back on the court full-time, the Nets are going to be a nightmare matchup for anyone.
Moderator: On the flip side, the knicks are struggling. Julius Randle had a solid game, but it wasn’t enough. What do you think they need to turn things around?
kevin Garnett: The Knicks need consistency. Randle is a beast, but he can’t do it alone. They’ve got to figure out their identity and build around their young core. It’s tough in the East right now, but they’ve got the pieces to compete.
Moderator: Joel Embiid had another monster game against the Magic. Do you think he’s the MVP frontrunner right now?
Kevin Garnett: Absolutely. Embiid is dominating on both ends of the floor. He’s unstoppable in the post, and his defense is elite. The Sixers are in a great position as of him. If he keeps this up, the MVP is his to lose.
Moderator: LeBron James just hit a historic milestone—30,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 10,000 assists. What’s your reaction to that achievement?
Kevin Garnett: LeBron is a once-in-a-lifetime player. To do what he’s done, for provided that he’s done it, is incredible. He’s redefining what it means to be great. But you know what? It’s not just about the numbers.It’s about the impact he’s had on the game,on the culture. He’s a legend, plain and simple.
