NBA: The G League is Too Small for Santi Aldama

NBA: The G League is Too Small for Santi Aldama

Aldama dominates G League, Eyes NBA Opportunity

Spanish phenom Santi aldama continues to make a strong case for increased playing time with the Memphis Grizzlies. Currently assigned to the Grizzlies’ G League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle, Aldama is showcasing his dominance in a league he’s clearly outgrown.

In a recent victory over the Oklahoma City Blue, Aldama led the Hustle with an impressive 25 points, shooting 7 of 12 from inside the arc and 3 of 10 from three-point range. He also contributed eight rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in just 26 minutes of action.

This performance is just the latest in a string of standout games for the 7’1″, 21-year-old forward. Aldama has consistently delivered double-doubles, racking up 28 points and 10 rebounds against the Iowa Wolves, 22 points and 12 rebounds against the Birmingham Squadron, and another 19 points and 10 rebounds in a rematch against Oklahoma City.

Aldama’s G League averages are nothing short of remarkable: 23.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists,1.3 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game in 31.3 minutes. These numbers highlight his versatility and impact on both ends of the court.

While Aldama has seen limited action with the Grizzlies this season, appearing in 27 games and averaging 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds, his recent G League success could pave the way for more opportunities in the NBA. He hasn’t played since January 29th, sitting out the last 11 games and seeing only 1:35 minutes of court time in the previous 14.

As the regular season winds down, Aldama’s impressive G League performances could be the key to unlocking a larger role with the Grizzlies.

Santi Aldama: G League Dominance and the Case for an NBA Return

Welcome back, hoops fans! Today we have a special guest, former NBA champion and current analyst, BJ Armstrong, to discuss the red-hot play of Memphis Grizzlies prospect Santi Aldama in the G League.

BJ, thanks for joining us!

BJ: My pleasure. Always happy to talk basketball, especially when we’re seeing such exciting young talent emerge.

Moderator: Santi Aldama is absolutely tearing it up wiht the Memphis Hustle. he’s averaging a staggering 23 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, plus showcasing his all-around game with assists, steals, and blocks. These numbers scream “NBA-ready,” don’t they?

BJ: They certainly do. You don’t put up those kinds of numbers against professional competition unless you have some serious talent. Aldama’s length, athleticism, and offensive versatility are intriguing. he’s shown the ability to score both inside and out, and his rebounding numbers are impressive for a player his size

Moderator: It’s clear Aldama has outgrown the G League. He’s been putting up these monster games consistently. He even dropped 25 points and 8 rebounds against the Oklahoma City Blue recently. Do you think Memphis shoudl be giving him more minutes with the Grizzlies, especially with the regular season winding down?

BJ: That’s a great question. It’s always tricky balancing developmental time in the G League with NBA experience, especially for a young player. The Grizzlies have a lot of depth upfront, but they’re also fighting for playoff positioning. From a growth standpoint, I think giving Aldama some more run with the Grizzlies would be beneficial.

Let him taste some real NBA minutes, test his skills against tougher competition, and get a feel for the speed and intensity of the game at that level.

Moderator: You mentioned Aldama’s size – he’s a 7’1” forward. His versatility on both ends of the court is really impressive for someone his stature.

BJ: Absolutely. Power forwards who can handle the ball, shoot the three, defend multiple positions, and rebound at a high level are incredibly valuable in today’s NBA. aldama’s skill set fits right in with that mold.

Moderator: It’s true; the modern NBA is played at a faster pace, with an emphasis on shooting and spacing. Aldama seems to fit that mold perfectly. You’ve obviously seen a lot of great players come and go. What do you see as Aldama’s potential ceiling in the NBA?

BJ: That’s a tough question. It’s always hard to say without a doubt with young players. But if he continues to develop and work hard, I truly believe he has the potential to be a double-double machine in the NBA. He has the tools to be a very good defender, a solid rebounder, and a consistent scorer.

Moderator: We’re seeing a lot of hype around Aldama, and rightfully so.

He has a lot going for him.

BJ, thanks for sharing your insights on Santi Aldama. It’s been a pleasure having you.
