Originally slated for December 2020, the game was postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. After a two-year delay, the excitement is palpable as both teams and their coaches eagerly anticipate this unique opportunity.
“We where thrilled to announce this game a few years ago, aiming to create something truly special,” shared Kentucky coach John Calipari. His counterpart, Juwan Howard, head coach of Michigan, echoed the sentiment, calling it “a once-in-a-lifetime experience” for his players.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Calipari remained optimistic. “Our world has been significantly impacted by COVID-19 over the past two years, but I held onto hope that we could make this game happen,” he stated. “Our fans have been eagerly awaiting this matchup, and I no they will turn out in force to support us. this will be an unforgettable experience for our players as well.”
This transatlantic showdown promises a high-caliber display of collegiate basketball, marking a triumphant return of the sport to European soil. While the NBA’s immediate return to Europe for regular season games seems unlikely, as recently confirmed by Commissioner Adam Silver, the possibility of pre-season exhibition matches remains open.
