A New Era for Belgian 1B: Format Changes and Increased Competition
The upcoming season in Belgian 1B will see a significant shift in format, promising a more dynamic and competitive landscape. Gone is the traditional double round-robin structure, replaced by a streamlined 22-match regular season featuring 12 teams.
This revamped format will showcase a blend of established professional clubs and promising young talent. Eight professional teams will be joined by four U23 squads, persistent by the top finishers in the current Belgian U23 competition. This integration of youth advancement teams adds an exciting element of unpredictability and fosters a pathway for rising stars.
Following the regular season, the 12 teams will be divided into two distinct groups: a promotion playoff group and a relegation playoff group, each comprising six teams.Importantly, accumulated points from the regular season will carry over into these playoff stages, ensuring that consistent performance throughout the year is rewarded.The promotion playoff group will see fierce competition for the coveted top spot. The team that emerges victorious after ten intense match days will be crowned champion of 1B and earn automatic promotion to the prestigious Jupiler Pro League. Simultaneously occurring, the team finishing last in the relegation playoff group will face the unfortunate outcome of relegation to the first national division.
