Winning a state championship is truly the pinnacle of high school sports – it’s what you train for all season and, of course, the years before.
But there is something that makes it even sweeter-
Win it all in one big decisive move.
That’s what we saw in the 4A Large School title games for both girls and boys, truly remarkable ways to win.
Starting in the girls’ game, Woodinville and Sumner battled it out to the bitter end in every sense of the word.
With less than 15 seconds left, Veronica Sheffey nailed a left-handed jump shot to give Woodinville a 65-63 lead. Sheffey scored 23 points in the game.
Sumner had one last chance with two seconds left, but Woodinville’s defense didn’t allow a shot attempt and the Falcons won the Girls 4A WIAA state title.
In the Boys 4A title game, regulation time wasn’t enough to settle things between Curtis and Mount Si.
In overtime, it was still tied with 30 seconds left until Tyce Paulsen stole the ball on a missed pass and went all the way in for the decisive layup.
Curtis won 52-49 to clinch the Boys 4A title.
The excitement wasn’t limited to the action at the Tacoma Dome, either.
At Yakima, Lynden Christian won 1A titles in both men’s and women’s basketball. The Lyncs Girls Hoops team won on a Libby Stump shot with less than five seconds left to win it all.
