Sailors Secure Victory Over Oilers with Stellar Pitching Performance
Newport Harbor High School’s baseball team emerged victorious against Huntington Beach High School on Friday, March 11th, 2022, with a final score of 5-3. The Sailors’ triumph was largely attributed to a dominant pitching display from their bullpen duo, Jackson Gilles and Bryce Blaser.
Gilles and Blaser combined for four scoreless innings, allowing only a single hit and effectively shutting down the Oilers’ offence.Their performance preserved the win for starting pitcher AJ Guitron-Moore, who secured his first victory of the season.
The Sailors wasted no time establishing an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. After two walks, Gilles capitalized on a wild pitch to score the first run. Trent Liolios,a Northwestern commit, then drove in another run with a ground ball, putting Newport Harbor ahead 2-0.
Huntington Beach responded swiftly, tying the game in the bottom of the first. Arizona State commit Ralph Velazquez launched a solo home run to center field, cutting the lead to one. Aidan Espinoza followed with a single and advanced to second on a pitching error. Brian Trujillo then delivered a clutch single, evening the score.
Newport Harbor regained the lead in the second inning, thanks to Liolios’s two-run double. Trujillo answered back for Huntington Beach in the third inning with a double of his own, narrowing the gap to 4-3.
Blaser extended the Sailors’ lead to 5-3 in the fourth inning with an RBI single.
Despite having runners in scoring position in both the fifth and seventh innings, Huntington Beach couldn’t capitalize. In the seventh, with a runner on second and two outs, Espinoza hit a hard ground ball up the middle. Sailors shortstop Joey Wright made a breathtaking play to secure the final out and seal the victory for Newport Harbor.
This win marked Newport Harbor’s first victory over Huntington Beach since 2017. While pleased with the win, first-year head coach Josh Lee emphasized that the team has larger goals in mind.”It’s a great testament to the seniors’ hard work,” Lee stated. “But let’s be clear, they have their conference title to defend, and we have ours. Though, it’s incredibly rewarding for our seniors to achieve a win over Huntington Beach during their high school careers.”
The Sailors’ extraordinary pitching performance and timely hitting showcased their potential for a accomplished season. As they continue to develop and refine their skills,Newport Harbor will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with in the coming months.
