“From now on, we will suspend cooperation with all our business partners in Russia, as well as suspend our social and digital media sites in Russian,” the NHL said Monday. “We are also no longer considering holding NHL-related events in Russia.” The NHL issued the statement after the Russian armed forces launched an invasion of Ukraine and sparked hostilities.
“We are also concerned about the Russian players who represent their clubs in the NHL, not Russia,” the NHL said. “We understand that players and their families are in very difficult circumstances.” 50 Russian players have played in at least one NHL match this season.
In world sports, the NHL is not the first to condemn and suspend cooperation with Russian organizations. Many clubs announced their withdrawal from the Russian Open Championships in the first days, including Riga’s Dinamo. In world football, Russia has been suspended from the competition, but in hockey, the International Ice Hockey Federation has disqualified Russian and Belarusian clubs and national teams.
