A FIFA and CAF official doctor has died while attending the FIFA World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Ghana, the Football Federation of Zambia (FAZ) said on Wednesday.
The Zambian Joseph Kabungo was present at the stadium in Abuja, Nigeria, as an official for doping control, on behalf of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“It is too early to dwell on the details of the cause of his death, but we will await the full report from CAF and FIFA on what exactly happened,” said Andrew Kamanga, the president of the Zambian federation.
Nigeria – Ghana ended in a 1-1 draw that qualified Ghana but eliminated Nigeria, who will miss the World Cup for the first time since 2006. The encounter ended in violence, fans flooding the field and causing chaos.
