Roman Abramovich announced last week that he wants to sell Chelsea. However, little seems to be going according to plan in this project. The Russian has to cut corners.
The turbulent days at Roman Abramovich go on. The Russian oligarch affected by the sanctions had announced that the FC Chelsea wanting to sell. He announced this in response to Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine. Abramovich had expected a sale of around three billion pounds (about 3.6 billion euros). Now it is said from England that none of the interested parties wants to pay this sum. There is a risk of billions in losses, as a purchase price of just two billion pounds (around 2.4 billion euros) seems more realistic.
Another drastic loss of money for Abramovich
The reason for this is Abramovich’s negotiating position. The 55-year-old wants to get rid of the club quickly, which pushes the price down. Although there are said to be around ten interested parties, there are still no rumors of concrete talks. An expert from the Premier League told the “Mirror”: “No matter who goes to the table with Abramovich, he will not give him what he wants.”
It would be the next drastic loss of money for the multi-billionaire, who has already waived an estimated €1.8 billion of all outstanding refunds from Chelsea. Given his fortune of over eleven billion euros, this would not really affect the oligarch.
However, it is bitter for Abramovich: According to Forbes, the price of the “blues” has skyrocketed by around 24 percent in the past two years. With the equivalent of 2.95 billion euros, Chelsea is the seventh most valuable club in the world. Nevertheless, he now has to sell it far below its value. Under normal circumstances, he could definitely have sold the reigning Champions League winner for his desired sum.
