Peleteiro and Mechaal lead the Spanish team for the World Indoor Championships

Ana PeleteiroOlympic bronze medalist in triple jump, i Nobility Mechal, European champion in the 3,000 meters in 2017, lead the Spanish team that will participate in Belgrade in the Indoor Athletics World Championships, from the 18th to the 20th of this month.

The team, of 25 members (13 women and 12 men), includes 13 current champions of Spain and seven national record holders. The Spanish Federation has requested a World Athletics the inclusion of the two 4×400 meter relays. If their participation is confirmed, it will be the third time in history that they will both go to an Indoor World Cup.

Furrier has in its history a medal at the World Indoor Championships, the bronze at Birmingham 2018 with a mark of 14.40, and two at the European Championships, a gold at Glasgow 2019 and a silver at Torun 2021.

Mechaalwho last weekend won a new double in Ourense – the third – in the Spanish Indoor Championships and has broken the European record of 3,000 m this year with 7: 30.82, could not avoid, this Wednesday at the Madrid meeting, that the Ethiopian Lamecha Girma won the title of World Indoor Tour, which comes with a special invitation to Belgrade, so in the Serbian capital they could be seen with four Ethiopians. So much Mechaal with Martha Perez have registered for the 1,500 and 3,000 meter events.

In addition to the two test athletes that each country can take to the World Cup, Ethiopia will have two extra seats, one for Yomif Kejelcha as a title defender, and another for Girma. The triplet hypothesis is therefore not ruled out. In the previous edition Ethiopia doubled and only the third place of the Kenyan Bethwell Birgen avoided the sweep, as another Ethiopian, The Hague Gebrhiwet, va be fourth ahead d’Adel Mechaal.

The other option that Spain had to obtain an additional place in the World Cup team did not materialize in the Madrid meeting either. Mariano Garcia, world leader of the year with 1: 45.12, could not prevent the British Elliot Giles, with whom the World Tour title was played, beat him on the last straight and take the invitation to Belgrade.

The Murcian will form the Spanish pair of the 800 m with Alvaro from Above, of Salamanca, who had a fixed place as champion of Spain, and is left out Adrian BelOlympic and world finalist.

The hospitalet athlete Mary Vincent will be in Belgrade, despite the slight physical setback that forced her to leave the length competition this Wednesday in Madrid, as she will travel there thanks to her fourth place in the world ranking of the pentathlon year with her 4,582 points from Ourense (Spanish record), and the absence of the injured is confirmed Esther Guerrero.
