Spurs’ win over Jazz allows veteran coach to surpass Don Nelson’s record
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich isn’t one to draw attention to himself, but his players made sure he enjoyed being in the spotlight for at least a few minutes after he became the coach with most wins during the regular season in NBA history.
Spurs players kept Popovich on the court to applause from home fans after their team beat the Utah Jazz 104-102. He looked uncomfortable in the midst of the attention, but finally cracked a smile.
His smile was due to more than just the record, as the Spurs rallied from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit to give Popovich a record for the ages. The win, Popovich’s 1,336th, puts him ahead of Don Nelson. Popovich celebrates his 26th season in the NBA, all of them at the helm of the Spurs.
Dejounte Murray led the Spurs with 27 points, with Jakob Poeltl adding 15 points and 11 rebounds. Donovan Mitchell scored 24 points to lead the Jazz, while Jordan Clarkson chipped in 17 points.
