Primoz Roglic takes firm option on overall victory in Paris-Nice with a win over Col de Turini | Paris – Nice 2022

Primoz Roglic has turned the queen stage in Paris-Nice to his will. The Slovenian from Jumbo-Visma reacted to everything that moved on the tough Col de Turini and finished it off powerfully in the sprint in an elite group. He thus strengthens his leadership position. Tomorrow the final stage to Nice awaits.

Stage 7 of Paris-Nice in a nutshell:

  • Winner of the day: Primoz Roglic showed confidence this morning and completely exceeded expectations on the tough Col de Turini (15km at 7.2%). The Slovenian skilfully played his fellow favorites and finished powerfully in the sprint. A first overall victory in the Course to the Sun is now very close.
  • Assignments: The line of the past few days was continued undisturbed today, with again handfuls of withdrawals. We have lost count for a while, but one thing is certain: tomorrow a mini platoon will arrive in Nice.
  • Morning: The traditional final stage to Nice seems at most a formality for this dominant Roglic. Or will the Slovenian still encounter himself on the difficult roads towards the Côte d’Azur?

De Gendt cannot cash in early flight, Roglic gives yellow jersey extra shine

After the warm-up work during the working week, the heavy work in Paris-Nice was only planned for the weekend. Saturday’s queen stage presented the “first real col of the cycling season” with the tough Col de Turini, according to our commentators earlier this week.

A large group including Thomas De Gendt and David Gaudu tried from afar, but the classification men were hungry and did not want to miss out on the stage victory. Almost everything came together at the foot of the final climb, the muscle roll between the favorites could begin.

Adam Yates was the first to light the fire, but a yellow Primoz Roglic soon dismantled the danger. Not much later, the Slovenian could no longer contain himself and rattled the tree himself.

Martínez was the only one to follow, an unruly Quintana and Simon Yates also joined in. Under the rag, the three companions already knew what time it was when Roglic slumped. He cashed in on his dominance with a perfectly timed sprint.

Roglic: “Tomorrow will be the decisive day”

“It was a tough day,” Roglic said afterwards. “From the start it was driven hard. But I had good legs today. I was able to follow the other favorites and finish it in the sprint.”

“It’s nice to win on a local climb. My 61st victory already? It’s not out of the blue. A lot of sacrifices and training were preceded. If you can finish it then it’s a great feeling.”

“Tomorrow will be the decisive day,” he continued. “The weather will not be good and the course will be very demanding. I know the new climb of the Col d’Èze, it will hurt with that very steep kilometer.”

Vansevenant (15th): “The climb was 3 km too long, suddenly it was over”

  1. 14 hours 47. Mauri Vansevenant has lost some time in the final and comes in around fifteenth place after about 2 minutes. †
  2. 14h45. Yellow Roglic highlights rule! No one has a story against Roglic’s acceleration. Martínez sprints to second place, ahead of Yates, Quintana and Almeida. All in all, the differences are limited. †
  3. 2 p.m. 44. Roglic speeds up! Is there anyone left? †
  4. 2 p.m. 43. The yellow jersey grabs the low stirrups, will it poop away in a minute? Meanwhile, a strong Almeida comes back from the background. †
  5. Last km. Will Roglic finish in the sprint or can someone else surprise? † 14 hours 42.
  6. 14 hours 42. The last kilometer is at 6 percent, so that can be done with a higher acceleration. Jose DeCauwer.
  7. 14h40. An acceleration from Yates is too much for Quintana, but the Colombian can quickly catch up as they continue to hesitate at the front. †
  8. 14h 39. Not in the mood for a surplace, Roglic accelerates again, but Quintana ripostes, with Yates and Martínez in his wake. †
  9. 14h 38. Suddenly we get a truce. Renaat Schotte.
  10. 14 hours 37. From 2 to 4 leaders. Simon Yates and Quintana have closed the gap on the leading duo. With 2.5 kilometers to go, the four musketeers suddenly look at each other. That way more people will come back from the background. †
  11. 14 hours 34. Strong Vansevenant. In the third group, a strong Vansevenant is still attached, just outside the top ten. For the time being, the young Belgian of Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl is doing what he announced this morning: showing himself among the big boys. †
  12. 2 pm 31. Martínez does not speculate and gives full throttle. If the leading duo turns around well, it will be difficult for Simon Yates and Quintana, who follow after just under ten seconds. †
  13. 2 p.m. 28. Roglic forces it himself! The yellow jersey doesn’t feel like that nervous attacking game and decides to force something himself. With a double gear he shakes almost everyone off him. Only Dani Martínez, defending champion on the Turini, can follow. †
  14. 2 p.m. 26. Ineos plays the team game, because when Roglic joins Adam Yates, Martínez jumps away. Then it’s Quintana’s turn. The big names are now attacking the pendulum. †
  15. 2 p.m. 25. Adam Yates opens the debates. Dennis’ pace is not fast enough for Adam Yates, who is the first to throw the bat in the henhouse. Roglic, Martínez and Quintana react, but then look the cat out of the tree. Simon Yates takes the opportunity to hook up. †
  16. 2 pm 22. Rally paradise. Where the chains rattle today, the engines roar every January. The Col de Turini with its many hairpin bends is therefore the permanent decor of the Rally of Monte Carlo. “Sebastien Loeb will probably have the fastest Strava time here,” jokes De Cauwer. †
  17. 2 pm 18. Rohan Dennis has taken the lead in the group of favorites to throw all the ballast overboard. His leader Roglic quickly follows with the Ineos duo Martínez-Yates and Quintana in his wake. †
  18. 2 p.m. 16. Houle one-man crew. Hugo Houle now also has to release the role in the peloton. The one-man team of Israel-PremierTech – all its teammates resigned earlier this week – is eleventh in the standings, but will sink in the standings after today. †
