But, at the same time, we have to acknowledge the gravity of the situation in Ukraine.Innocent people are suffering, and turning a blind eye wouldn’t be right.
Moderator: Some argue that punishing athletes for the actions of their government is unfair. How do you respond to that?
Jaromir Jagr: I understand that argument. Athletes dedicate their lives to their sport, and they shouldn’t be held responsible for decisions made by politicians. Though, when your country is engaged in such a brutal act of aggression, it’s hard to entirely separate yourself from that reality.These sanctions,while painful,send a message that the world is watching and that there will be consequences.
Moderator: We’ve seen other actions taken within the hockey world as well, such as the Latvian team withdrawing from the KHL and teams severing ties with Russian sponsors. These are symbolic gestures, but do you believe they have any real impact?
Jaromir Jagr: Every action counts. These decisions, however small they may seem, contribute to the pressure on Russia to end the war. It shows that the international community stands united against their aggression.
