Rafael Nadal is out for the Miami Open

Rgrip Nadal became the most recent renowned tennis player to drop out of the Miami Open.

The Spaniard has been a finalist in the event five times, but has not participated in Miami since 2017. His absence means that neither of the two champions of this year’s first Grand Slam will be in the tournament.

Nadal was crowned in Australia, to win his 21st title in a major, with which set a new brand.

Ashleigh Bartywho was crowned in the female branch, also resigned at the beginning of the month.

Nadal’s decision happenedthree days after Novak Djokovic announced that he would not be in Indian Wells or Miami due to not being vaccinated and cannot enter the United States.

“Rafa will certainly be missed. He has a huge following here in South Florida and we look forward to him coming back to Miami next year,” tournament director James Blake said.

Nadal, who will not be in Indian Wells, is currently ranked fourth in the world. He was a finalist in Miami in 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2017 -all occurred at the previous tournament venue in South Florida on Key Biscayne.

The Miami Open starts on March 21.
