Actually, the Settimana Internazionale Coppi a Bartali should have been the backdrop for Mathieu van der Poel’s return. However, due to illnesses within his team, that return already took place in Milan-Sanremo. He showed that he had not forgotten cycling by any means. And that’s great, because in this cycling round there are plenty of opportunities for someone with his qualities. In the leader’s jersey keep track of it throughout the week.

Etappe 1, dinsdag 22 mar 2022: Riccione – Riccione (164,5 km)
The regular followers of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali will undoubtedly be surprised. The stage race kicked off this year with ‘only’ one stage on the opening day, where there were normally always two planned. It did not reduce the tension, partly due to Mauro Schmid and Eddie Dunbar. This duo drove away in the final and was allowed to sprint for the victory. Schmid won, while Mathieu van der Poel sprinted to fourth place in the chasing group.

Stage 2, Wednesday 23 March 2022: Riccione – Longiano (169.5 km)
On day two of the Italian cycling week, the riders headed towards Longiano, where a local route had been drawn. Mathieu van der Poel saw it as a great training option; he already placed a few attacks at a hundred kilometers from the finish, but because of this, he lacked some strength in the final: it was Ethan Hayter who trumped everything and everyone in the steep final kilometer.

Stage 3, Thursday 24 March 2022: San Marino – San Marino (147.0 km)
On Thursday we got to see the first serious test for the classification riders this round. The finish of the stage was uphill (5.7km at 7.6 percent) and, like Wednesday, someone from INEOS Grenadiers took the win. This time no Ethan Hayter or a strong Eddie Dunbar, but little Ben Tulett who booked his first professional victory. The Briton was a few seconds ahead of teammate Dunbar, which means that they are now also one (Dunbar) and two (Tulett) in the standings.

Stage 4, Friday, March 25, 2022: Montecatini – Montecatini (158.7 km)
The penultimate day of the Coppi e Bartali week was Mathieu van der Poel’s day. The Dutchman attacked with seventy kilometers from the finish, closed the gap to six remaining leaders, left them behind, was caught up again by the peloton and then sprinted everything and everyone from the wheel. Mathieu’s day, it could be a fairy tale.
