It’s heartbreaking to see what’s happening in Erbil and a stark reminder that we all have a responsibility to work towards peace.
Moderator: As someone who has dedicated your life to uniting people through sports,what role do you think athletics can play in bridging divides and fostering understanding?
Dikembe Mutombo: Sports have an incredible power to bring people together. It transcends borders, languages, and cultures. On the court, we are teammates, not adversaries. We celebrate each othre’s successes and learn from our failures. This spirit of unity and respect is something we need to carry beyond the playing field and into our daily lives.
Moderator: There’s a lot of speculation surrounding this attack. Some believe it was intended as a message. What message do you think the world should be sending in response?
Dikembe Mutombo: The world needs to send a clear message that violence is never acceptable. We need to stand in solidarity wiht the victims in erbil and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
But more importantly, we need to focus on finding peaceful solutions to conflicts. Dialog, diplomacy, and understanding are the only paths to sustainable peace.

dikembe Mutombo: I see hope in the young people. They are the ones who will inherit this world, and I believe they have the power to create a better future. When I see children from different cultures playing together, laughing together, and sharing dreams together, it gives me hope that we can overcome these challenges.
