SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Free agent left-hander Carlos Rodon has agreed to a two-year, $44 million deal with the San Francisco Giants, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations.
A formal deal is subject to a physical with the defending NL West champions, the person told The Associated Press on Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity, because the deal has not been made official.
The information comes a day after the lockout in Major League Baseball ended.
Rodón, 29, spent his first seven seasons in the majors with the Chicago White Sox, making his first appearance in the National League. It’s coming off his best season, in which he posted his best winning record of 13-5 and his lowest ERA of 2.37 in 24 starts.
The pitcher also made his first All-Star Game appearance and helped the White Sox win the AL Central. But Rodón, who was affected by arm and shoulder problems.
He only pitched 28 innings in the final two months of the season and was ineffective in a playoff outing against Houston in the Division Series.
He’ll help fill out the rotation alongside Logan Webb and fellow southpaw Alex Wood. The Giants lost right-hander Kevin Gausman to the Blue Jays on a five-year, $110 million contract, and declined to re-sign right-hander Johnny Cueto for $22 million.
Wood was given a two-year, $25 million deal to stay with San Francisco, which won a franchise-record 107 games last season before losing in the Division Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
