Roger Federer withdraws from Roland-Garros and Wimbledon

The 40-year-old tennis player offered an update on his condition to Swiss broadcaster SRF as he attended a Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup event in Lenzerheide, where he owns a property.

Last November, he indicated that he was unlikely to recover in time to play Wimbledon in June.

Federer, however, did not discuss his appearance at the US Open, which gets under way in New York on August 29. At this time, his presence in Montreal for the National Bank Open (August 6 to 14) remains uncertain.

Federer said his rehabilitation is going well and he is thinking about returning to the court. Before going under the knife last August, the Swiss had indicated that his main motivation for undergoing such an intervention was to ensure a good quality of life with his family – and not to return to the highest level of the professional tennis.

With his 20 major titles, he ranks second among the most successful grand slam players in the history of modern tennis, tied with Novak Djokovic. He is second only to Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who won his 21st Grand Slam title last January at the Australian Open.

Federer has not played since his loss in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July 2021 against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz.

Suffering from a knee injury for two years, the Swiss has only played 13 games in 2021 and 6 in 2020. He is 27th in the world rankings.
