Davis Cup
The couple Copil and Tecau beat Davidovich and Martínez (7-6 (2) and 6-4) and there will be a fourth point in Marbella
Romania resurfaced in the doubles and Spain will have to play a fourth point in order to seal their qualification for the Davis Cup Finals. The Romanian couple formed by Marius Copil and Horia Teca beat Pedro Martínez and Alejandro Davidovich (7-6 (2) and 6-4) to extend the tie.
The Romanians, more united and experts in doubles, especially with Tecau, winner of two Grand Slams, knew how to row to close the victory in two sets. Both sets started with an advantage for the Spanish couple, who took a 3-1 lead in the first, but saw how Copil and Tecau recovered the disadvantage and forced a playoff. This started with good news for Spain after a double fault from the Romanians, but three close balls, which went wide by centimeters, weighed down the options of the Spanish, who were forced to seek a comeback.
They started the second set even better and took a 4-1 lead, but Copil and Tecau emerged with five straight games to give Romania the point and cause the series to go to the fourth point.
This shouldn’t be a problem for Sergi Bruguera’s men, who now have two chances to take the match. First Roberto Bautista will try against Copil himself, whom he has beaten on the three occasions they have faced each other, and later, if necessary, Carlos Alcaraz will jump on the track to face Gabi Adrian Boitan, number 721 in the world. The doubles defeat should remain just an anecdote.
