Souleymane Karamoko, a standout defensive back for the Université Laval Rouge et Or, is poised to follow in the footsteps of a select few alumni who have tasted the thrill of the NFL. Invited to participate in the 2022 International Player Pathway Programme, Karamoko joins a prestigious group that includes Antony Auclair, Mathieu Betts, and Sébastien Séjean.

Karamoko’s journey to this point has been marked by dedication and perseverance. He first caught the eye of the program in July and maintained consistent dialogue, sharing his game footage and engaging wiht coaches. His versatility on the field impressed the program’s evaluators, leading to the official invitation in November.

“I was thrilled from the moment they first reached out in July,” Karamoko shared with The newspaper. “Throughout the season, I kept them updated with my progress. It’s incredibly encouraging to have their support and recognition of my abilities.”

The International Player Pathway Program, revived in 2017, has proven to be a successful launchpad for international talent. Notable success stories include Jakob Johnson, a fullback for the new England Patriots (Germany), and jordan Mailata, a tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles (Australia).Mailata’s remarkable journey culminated in a lucrative four-year, $64 million contract extension in 2021, demonstrating the program’s potential to propel players to NFL stardom.

While Mailata’s success is inspiring, Karamoko remains grounded, understanding that the invitation is just the first step. “It’s motivating to see what others have achieved, but I know there are no guarantees,” he stated. “I have to prove myself and demonstrate that I belong in the NFL.”

Karamoko’s path to this opportunity has been anything but conventional.From his beginnings in flag football in France in 2008 to his time with the Filons du Cégep de Thetford Mines and ultimately the Rouge et Or, his journey reflects unwavering commitment and a passion for the game.

“My dream has always been to play professionally, initially focusing on the CFL,” Karamoko admitted. “I hoped for a chance to showcase my skills at an NFL mini-camp, but I never imagined this incredible opportunity.”

The 25-year-old defensive back will embark on a 10-week training camp in Arizona on January 28th, joining 12 other international athletes from nine different countries.Players who don’t secure an immediate contract will have the chance to impress scouts from four randomly selected NFL teams during dedicated practise sessions.

Karamoko’s impressive collegiate career speaks for itself.Last season, he recorded 28 tackles and five pass deflections. Over three seasons with the Rouge et Or, he has amassed 73.5 tackles, 10 pass deflections, one interception, and three quarterback sacks.
