In a show of unwavering support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict, FIFA and UEFA issued a joint statement on February 28th, announcing the indefinite suspension of Russian national and club teams from all competitions. This decisive action,driven by solidarity with the Ukrainian people,follows the invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The repercussions of this ban are important. Russian clubs will be absent from the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s premier club competition. More notably, the Russian national team will be barred from participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a global sporting spectacle that captivates billions and ranks as the second most-watched event worldwide after the Olympic Games. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Qatar from November 21st to December 18th, 2022.
Adding to the pressure on Russia,UEFA has also severed its lucrative partnership with Gazprom,a Russian state-owned energy giant. This sponsorship deal, estimated to be worth €40 million, has been put on hold indefinitely.

Today, we have the honour of speaking with former World No.3 tennis player and Olympic gold medalist, Elena Dementieva, to discuss this controversial decision and its wider implications.

Elena: It’s my pleasure to be here.
elena, as a former athlete who competed on the world stage, how do you feel about the ban on Russian teams?
Elena: This is an extremely difficult situation with no easy answers. Sport should ideally be a unifying force, transcending political boundaries. However, the current situation in Ukraine is so grave, so horrific, that I understand and support the decision made by FIFA and UEFA.It sends a strong message of solidarity with Ukraine and puts pressure on the Russian government.
Some argue that punishing individual athletes, many of whom have spoken out against the war, is unfair. What are your thoughts on that?
Elena: It’s a valid point. Many Russian athletes have expressed their opposition to the war and are suffering just as much as everyone else. It’s a painful situation for them, being caught in the middle. I believe that international sport federations should explore ways to support these athletes individually, perhaps through scholarships or training opportunities, while maintaining the ban on national teams.
the ban also has financial repercussions, especially with UEFA terminating its lucrative sponsorship deal with Gazprom. Do you think economic pressure will be effective in influencing political change?
elena: Economic sanctions are a powerful tool,and in this case,they can serve as a reminder to the Russian government that their actions have consequences.
Tho, it’s critically important to remember that sanctions can also disproportionately affect ordinary citizens. The hope is that the pressure will eventually lead to a peaceful resolution to this conflict.
Do you think this decision sets a precedent for future political interventions in sport? Were do you draw the line?
Elena: It’s a complex question.
While sport should remain largely apolitical, we’ve seen in recent years instances where sport has been used as a platform for social and political change. Ultimately, each situation needs to be assessed individually, considering the gravity of the circumstances and the potential impact on all parties involved.
What message woudl you like to send to young athletes in Russia who are dreaming of competing on the world stage?
Elena: Keep your dreams alive. Despite the current situation, never give up on your passion for sport.Use it as a tool for positive change and strive to become a force for good in the world. Let this experience make you stronger, more compassionate, and more determined to build a better future.
