Russia summons UN Council over alleged US biological weapons

United Nations.- Russia called a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday to discuss what it says are “US military biological activities on Ukrainian territory.”

The Russian request, made public in a tweet by its deputy representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, was made after the US government rejected Russian claims that Ukraine is operating chemical and biological laboratories with the backing of Washington.

Responding to accusations made this week by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova without presenting evidence, White House press secretary Jen Psaki publicly warned on Wednesday that Russia might attempt to use chemical and biological weapons. against Ukraine, a neighboring country that it invaded.

Polyansky said that Moscow had asked for the Security Council to meet on Friday. At the moment it is unknown when and if the meeting will actually take place.

Psaki called the Russian claims “absurd,” tweeting: “This is all a blatant move by Russia to try to justify its premeditated, unprovoked, and unwarranted attack on Ukraine.”
