Salaspils Sports School Dominates Handball Scene
The Salaspils Sports School handball team secured a hard-fought victory against their rivals, the Stopiņi Parish Handball Club, in a thrilling match held in Salaspils on Thursday evening.
From the outset, the Salaspils team asserted their dominance, quickly establishing a five-goal lead (9:4) in the first half. By halftime, they had extended their advantage to a pleasant 20:14. Although Stopiņi managed to narrow the gap to four goals after the break, Salaspils regained control, pushing their lead back to nine goals (29:20) midway through the second half. Despite a late surge from Stopiņi in the final ten minutes, it was too little, too late, as Salaspils emerged victorious with a final score of 33:30.
Anastasija Agarkova led the scoring for Salaspils with an impressive 11 goals, followed by Renāte Salmane with eight and Dace Potapova with seven. For Stopiņi, Lauri Lielā and Nine Elita Ekkerte each contributed 12 goals.
This victory solidifies Salaspils’ position at the top of the Premier League standings. With eight wins in ten games, they boast a commanding 16 points, while Stopiņi currently occupies the seventh position with only one win in eight matches.
Salaspils continued their winning streak with another impressive performance, defeating the Skrivera and aizkraukle team “S&A” with a score of 29:23. The turning point of the match came towards the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, as Salaspils transformed a 14:14 tie into a 19:15 lead. Kaspars Luksis led the scoring for Salaspils with seven goals, while Kristiāns Strautnieks, Krists Vidzis, and Rainers Gailums each contributed five.
Currently, Salaspils and the ulbroka Sports Club share the lead in Group B of the Premier League’s second stage tournament. Six teams are vying for the single qualifying spot in the elimination tournament.
