New Beginnings: A Conversation with World Cup Winner, Bertram Vogts
Hand-in-hand with the thrill of victory on the pitch often comes the quiet joys of life off it. Today, we’re delving into a heartwarming tale with a footballing legend, none other than former German international and manager, Bertram Vogts.
vogts, a World Cup winner with West Germany in 1974 and a highly respected manager throughout his career, joins us to discuss the news of Sami Khedira and Melanie Leupolz’s impending parenthood. Here’s what the maestro had to say:
Moderator: Bertram, Sami Khedira and Melanie Leupolz are expecting their first child. As someone who’s both been a celebrated player and helped shape the careers of many young footballers, what are your thoughts on this new chapter for Khedira?
Bertram Vogts: (chuckles) it’s wonderful news! Football is a demanding profession, and these two have already achieved so much on the pitch. Starting a family is a different kind of challenge, but an immensely rewarding one. Sami always struck me as a mature and thoughtful young man; I believe he’ll take to fatherhood splendidly.
Moderator: Indeed, Sami has often spoken about wanting to settle down and start a family. What kind of impact do you think parenthood might have on his playing career?
Bertram Vogts: It’s entirely individual, you know. Some players seem to find renewed energy and clarity after becoming fathers. Others find the balance trickier.
(Vogts leans forward, a thoughtful frown creasing his brow.)
I remember when my own children were young. It was a juggling act, finding time for family and the demands of the managerial world. But ultimately, the love and joy they brought into my life far outweighed the challenges.
Moderator: Melanie Leupolz is a talented footballer in her own right, playing for Chelsea in the Women’s super League. Do you see any parallels between the experience of becoming a father for Sami and the possible impact on Melanie’s career?
Bertram Vogts: Absolutely! The challenges are very similar, perhaps even more pronounced for female athletes who are frequently enough facing greater pressure and less support in their careers. Melanie’s juggling act will be even more complex. She has my utmost respect for branching out on both fronts simultaneously. What’s crucial is the support system they have in place. Family, friends, and understanding teammates can make a world of difference.
Moderator: Looking back on your own career, Bertram, did you ever feel that the demands of professional football made it arduous to balance personal life and family?
Bertram Vogts: (a wistful smile touches his lips) Definitely. When I was a player, the intensity was unrelenting. We were constantly on the move, training, traveling, competing. Family life took a backseat at times. Luckily, I had a strong wife who understood the commitments of the game. Looking back, I might have made some different choices to ensure a better balance.
(He pauses, eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief.)
But hey, I wouldn’t change a thing. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
