AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Winning must be a routine thing for Scottie Scheffler by now. Sunday’s match play championship victory was special for a range of reasons, and the new number one in world golf couldn’t hide it.
Moments after Scheffler defeated Kevin Kisner on the 15th hole for his third title in five tournaments, the 25-year-old Texan was overwhelmed by tears and hugs from his wife, parents, sisters and anyone who could get close to him. at the Austin Country Club.
Ever since his college years, Scheffler has longed to play against the best in the world.
Now he has everyone behind him, as number one.
“I never got this far in my dreams,” Scheffler said at the trophy ceremony, before breaking down and wiping away tears. “I only play golf. I love going out to compete.”
Scheffler is the most dominant player at the moment and the ranking supports him.
What is amazing is that it was only six weeks ago that he captured his first title on the PGA tour.
A year after losing in the match play championship duel, Scheffler never trailed Kisner, building a 3-point lead after six holes, never giving him a chance to catch up. Scheffler wrapped it up with a par on the 15th hole for a 4-and-3 victory.
Scheffler was never down in the semifinal against Dustin Johnson or Kisner. He went the last 57 holes without being down, and he was solid in the championship match.
“He’s playing incredible golf,” Kisner said. “I couldn’t get the putt to cooperate”:
Scottie Scheffler reached the championship round of the tournament for the second year in a row, this time with much more at stake.
A year ago, he was trying to get his first victory on the tour. On Sunday, he held on to beat Dustin Johnson first.
Kisner joined Tiger Woods and Geoff Ogilvy as the only players to reach the championship matchup at least three times since the World Golf Championship began in 1999. He lost the final in 2018 and won the following year.
