Sébastien Grandjean: “I was made to coach Standard”

As Vincent Kompany, he likes to throw young people. As Felice Mazzuhe is very close to his players and he was crowned coach of the year in 2021. As Philippe Clement, he was champion last season, but it was… in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. At 51, Sebastien Grandjeancoach of CS Fola Esch-sur-Alzette, now feels ready to take on a Mazzu, Clément or Kompany challenge…

It was in Luxembourg – the province – that he mainly spent his playing career, at Stade Gedinnois, Libramont and Athus. But it was in Luxembourg – the country – that he acquired his coaching stripes, in Dudelange, at Jeunesse Esch, then at rival Fola Esch. Sébastien Grandjean has coached the three most successful clubs in the GBL, the Grand Ducal championship, in recent years. Luxo football, he knows: “Football in the Grand Duchy is a football which is not totally professional, nor totally amateur, where we have to manage both boys who work and others who do not work. But it is a football which improves from year to year, which becomes more and more professional. And then, we must never forget it, it is a national first division, with therefore access to the European Cups, an essential element for the clubs. Titles are good, but Europe is a must.”
