I believe sport has a unifying power, the ability to transcend differences and bring people together. But it’s naïve to think it can exist in a vacuum, detached from the realities of the world. When faced with such blatant aggression and devastation, silence from the sporting community would be complicity.
Some argue that focusing on the plight of individual athletes distracts from the larger political context of the war. What’s your take on that?
It’s a delicate balance, isn’t it? while understanding the bigger picture is crucial, we mustn’t lose sight of the human cost. These are real lives, real futures being stolen. Highlighting their stories not only honors their memory but also serves as a stark reminder of what’s at stake.
What do you think the global sporting community can do to support Ukrainian athletes and amplify their voices?
