Masumi-san, thank you so much for joining us. The 2022 Spring Training season certainly had its share of storylines. While the spotlight shone brightly on Tsuyoshi Shinjo and his flamboyant arrival with the Nippon-Ham Fighters, you quietly steered the Giants’ pitching staff under a unique circumstance: reduced media attention due to the Beijing Olympics coinciding with training.
Did the absence of the typical media frenzy allow your pitchers to focus more intently on thier craft?
Masumi Kuwata (MK): You know, it’s captivating you ask that. There’s always a buzz around Spring training, irrespective of external circumstances. However, having those distractions minimized definitely allowed the pitchers to settle into their routines and really hone in on what they needed to work on. Sometimes that intense media scrutiny can be a double-edged sword. It can be motivating, but it can also be overwhelming, especially for younger players. This year, they could really isolate themselves and focus on their craft.
You mentioned younger players. The Giants’ pitching staff boasts a mix of seasoned veterans and promising young arms. How does your coaching approach differ when guiding those with different levels of experience?
MK: Respect is paramount. Every player, be it a rookie or a seasoned veteran, deserves my utmost respect. My job is to understand their individual needs and tailor my coaching accordingly. For the young guys, it’s about building confidence, instilling good habits, and showing them the ropes. The veterans, on the other hand, need someone who can challenge them, push them to refine their skills, and stay ahead of the curve.

MK: Honesty and openness.I don’t sugarcoat anything. I tell my pitchers exactly what I see, what they’re doing well, and where they need to improve.

MK: They’ve got a solid team, no doubt. Takatsu-san is a smart manager. He knows how to get the best out of his players.
