During Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on the morning of February 24, Sprukts, along with another local hockey player, Oleg Shishlanikov, and Mark Mara Kalenikov from Lithuania, were forced to flee Kramatorsk, where their Donetsk Donbass team was based. The day before, “Donbass” played the Ukrainian championship game in the Kramatorsk ice rink.

The journey home took six days and was about 4,000 kilometers long, as it took Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Lithuania to get home.

“I do not believe that the war will start. The Ukrainians themselves do not seem to believe it. So now I am considering joining the National Guard,” the 25-year-old hockey player said in an interview.

Sprukts has received an offer from the “Olimp” / “Venta 2002” team, which last year helped him win the Latvian championship and was represented at the start of this season.

“I’m glad to have the opportunity to finish this season and I hope to be able to help the team in the playoffs,” says the hockey player, who has gradually resumed training.

Sprint “Olimp” / “Venta 2002” have scored two goals in 11 games this season and made three assists. In Ukraine, he scored six goals in 25 matches and made 12 assists.

He has also played in the Alpine Hockey League, France and the Russian Youth Hockey League during his career.
