Stakhovsky, Warring Tennis Player: Djokovic Supported Me, Nadal and Federer Did Not

From Tennis Court to Battlefield: Sergei Stakhovsky’s Call for Support

Former Ukrainian tennis star Sergei Stakhovsky has traded his racket for military fatigues, joining the fight against the Russian invasion of his homeland. In a display of unwavering patriotism, Stakhovsky has been on the front lines for over a week, defending his country alongside fellow Ukrainian athletes who have answered the call to arms.

Seeking solidarity from the global tennis community, Stakhovsky reached out to three of the sport’s biggest names: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, adn Roger Federer. While Djokovic responded with a message of support and even engaged in a conversation with the former player, Nadal and Federer remained silent.”Djokovic’s support meant a lot,” Stakhovsky shared, highlighting the impact of the Serbian star’s gesture. “We even had a chance to talk. It’s unfortunate that Federer and Nadal chose not to respond, but I understand. This conflict isn’t directly affecting them.”

The gravity of the situation weighs heavily on Stakhovsky. “never in my wildest dreams did I imagine myself wearing a bulletproof vest in Kyiv,” he confessed. “The Russian invasion is a catastrophe. Bombing cities, taking innocent lives – it’s horrific. We need a united front to stop this madness and hold Putin accountable for his actions.”

Stakhovsky’s plea for support echoes the sentiments of countless ukrainians who are bravely resisting the Russian onslaught. As the conflict enters its second week, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a swift and peaceful resolution.

“A Call to Arms, On and Off the court”: Discussing sergei stakhovsky’s Stand with Tennis Legend Martina Navratilova

The tennis world is familiar with courageous athletic feats, but the current situation in Ukraine throws a starkly different kind of challenge onto the court.

Former Ukrainian player Sergei Stakhovsky, known for his upset victory over Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013, has put his racket down and picked up a weapon to defend his country against the Russian invasion. His actions have sparked a debate within the tennis community: When a global crisis hits, what obligation do athletes have to speak out? Joining us today to discuss this complex issue is tennis legend Martina Navratilova, a vocal advocate for social justice both on and off the court.

Welcome, Martina. Your thoughts on Sergei Stakhovsky’s decision to enlist?

Martina Navratilova: It’s incredibly brave. It’s one thing to speak out against injustice, but quite another to put yourself in harm’s way for your beliefs. As a former athlete myself, I can’t imagine the emotional turmoil he must be going through, but his decision speaks volumes about his patriotism and courage. This goes beyond tennis, it’s about standing up for what’s right.

Stakhovsky expressed disappointment that Rafael Nadal and Roger federer didn’t publicly respond to his plea for support. Do you think athletes have a moral obligation to speak out on international issues?

Martina Navratilova: I believe they do,but it’s not a simple black-and-white answer. Each individual must decide based on their own conscience and circumstances. Some athletes may fear repercussions, and others may simply feel uncomfortable taking a political stance. However, silence can sometimes be interpreted as complicity. I admire those who use their platform to advocate for change, but I won’t judge those who choose silence. It’s a personal choice.

Critics argue that athletes should “stick to sports” and not involve themselves in politics. What’s your response to that?

Martina Navratilova: Athletes are people first, and people are affected by global events. to expect them to compartmentalize their lives and ignore injustice is unrealistic. Speaking out against war, discrimination, or any form of oppression is not “political” – it’s about basic human decency. Sometimes, silence is the biggest crime of all.

This war has touched the tennis community deeply, with dozens of Ukrainian players impacted. How do you see this conflict affecting the future of the sport?

Martina Navratilova: This war is a tragedy for Ukraine, for the world, and for tennis. It’s completely understandable that Ukrainian players are struggling to focus on their careers right now. The psychololgical toll this takes on them and their families is immeasurable. We need to offer them our support and understanding. As for the future, it’s hard to say. Hopefully, peace will return soon, and tennis can be a force for unity and healing. This situation highlights the fragility of peace and the importance of global solidarity.

Serena Williams, Billie Jean King, and you have been outspoken throughout your careers. What message do you have for young athletes today who might feel unsure about using their voice?

Martina Navratilova: Use your voice. Your voice matters. Don’t be afraid to speak out against injustice, even if it’s unpopular. Stand up for what you believe in, even if you stand alone. Your courage can inspire others and make a real difference.

Thank you for your insights, Martina. Let’s open this up to our readers. What are your thoughts on athletes’ responsibility during times of crisis? Share your opinions in the comment section below.
