Wawrinka recently graced the iconic Grand Rex cinema in paris for a preview screening of ‘Retirement Home,’ a film he co-produced. This exciting venture marks a new chapter for the three-time Grand Slam champion, who has been absent from the tennis circuit for a year due to injury.
I had the privilege of sitting down with Stan for an extended breakfast with L’Équipe to discuss his recovery, future aspirations, and reflections on the tennis world he’s been away from for so long.
Me: Stan, welcome back! It’s great to see you looking healthy and energized. How has the recovery process been, and are you eager to return to competitive tennis?
Stan: Thanks,it’s good to be back. The past year has been challenging, both physically and mentally.
Recovering from this type of injury takes time and patience, but I’m feeling strong and motivated. I miss the competition, the adrenaline rush of playing at the highest level, and the camaraderie with fellow players. Returning to the court is definitely a goal, but I’m taking it one day at a time.
Me: You’ve always been known for your fierce determination on court. How has that mindset helped you through this period of recovery?
Stan: Absolutely. Tennis has taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of setting goals.
Those lessons have proven invaluable during my recovery. There have been moments of doubt and frustration, but I’ve channeled those feelings into pushing myself harder, focusing on small victories, and visualizing my return to the game.
Me: While you’ve been away, you’ve ventured into a fascinating new domain—film production.Tell us about ‘Retirement Home’ and what drew you to this project.
Stan: ‘Retirement Home’ is a story about second chances, facing your fears, and finding purpose in unexpected places. I was drawn to the script’s emotional depth and its exploration of themes that resonate with me. Co-producing this film has been a thrilling experience. Me: This move into film certainly demonstrates your versatility. Do you see yourself pursuing acting or directing roles in the future?
Stan: Never say never! Right now, my focus is on my physical rehabilitation and perhaps returning to tennis. But I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the filmmaking process and I’m open to exploring new opportunities in the future.
Me: what are your thoughts on the current state of men’s tennis? Any players who have particularly impressed you during your hiatus?
Stan: It’s been fascinating to watch the young generation rise to prominence. Players like Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Jannik sinner are incredibly talented and bring a fresh energy to the game. It’s going to be exciting to see how they continue to develop and challenge the established stars.
Me: what message would you like to share with your fans who have been patiently awaiting your return?
Stan: Thank you for your unwavering support. it means the world to me. The road back hasn’t been easy, but your encouragement has been a constant source of motivation. Hopefully, I’ll be back on court soon, stronger than ever.
