Stephen Curry will return to his old schedule

With an average of 34 minutes since the start of this 2021/22 financial year, Stephen Curry is having a classic season for him at this level. The real difference lies in the division of this playing time. During the good years of Golden State, the Warriors playmaker had his routine.

He played the first and third quarters in full, then the second and the quarter in half. He thus had two six-minute moments to breathe, one in each half.

This season, as Klay Thompson was not yet back, Steve Kerr had changed his method with his star, leaving Stephen Curry in the middle of each act. Thus, the coach liked to have his 2015 and 2016 MVP to start each quarter. But it’s over now.

“He will have a rest period per half, and no longer two”announces the coach of Golden State at NBC Sports. “We will probably bridge between the first and the second, then the third and the fourth quarter. It will depend on how he is in the first and third quarters. Now that Thompson is back and we’re nearing the end of the season, it’s important to put that pattern in place for Stephen. »

We will no longer necessarily be in the system before, that is to say twelve minutes of play, then six minutes of rest, before leaving for six minutes, in the first and second half. But the essential is there: Stephen Curry will be able to replay long minutes all the same.

“It’s easier that way to keep it around 36 minutes”says Steve Kerr. “Lately, we needed to win so we made him play the entire last quarter several times. His rest time was coming, but we were trailing by six points, we were struggling to score, so we had to keep him on the floor. Now is the right time to make this change. »

Stephen Curry, who will turn 34 in a few days (March 14), will therefore have 18 games to find his feet before the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs.
