A Point Won, Confidence Gained: Stuttgart Holds Union to a Draw
The Berlin derby between 1. FC Union Berlin and Hertha BSC took an unexpected turn, with neither team securing a crucial victory. While Union Berlin aimed to reach their 40-point target for the season, a late equalizer from VfB Stuttgart dashed their hopes. This result also saw Stuttgart climb out of the relegation zone, swapping places with Hertha BSC who suffered a 2-0 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Stuttgart’s resurgence is fueled by the return of key players like Sasa Kalajdzic, Omar Marmoush, and Chris Führich.Kalajdzic, in particular, has been instrumental in their recent success, scoring three goals in his last four appearances. His presence was crucial in securing a point against Union Berlin,a team known for its strong defensive association.
“No one wanted to here that we missed Kalajdzic in the first half of the season,” admitted Stuttgart’s sporting director, Sven Mislintat, highlighting the striker’s importance.
The match itself was a tense affair, characterized by cautious play and few clear-cut chances. Union Berlin, despite dominating possession, struggled to break down Stuttgart’s resolute defense. Their breakthrough came through a penalty converted by Taiwo Awoniyi, but Stuttgart responded with a well-worked goal from Kalajdzic, who expertly finished a cross from Borna Sosa.
Stuttgart’s resilience was further demonstrated by their comeback victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach the previous week, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. This fighting spirit, coupled with the return of key players, has instilled a newfound confidence within the team.
“It was just vital for us to tip the momentum,we did that last week,” said Mislintat. “Now you have ‘silvered’ that victory with a point win. The grab for the more expensive metal should follow in the coming week, when VfB welcomes FC Augsburg.”
Kalajdzic echoed this sentiment, expressing his hope for a packed stadium when Stuttgart faces Augsburg: “I hope that every one of the 60,000 seats allowed will be filled and that the fans will carry us forward.”
The draw against Union Berlin, while not a win, represents a significant step forward for Stuttgart in their fight against relegation. Their recent performances, coupled with the return of key players, suggest they are well-equipped to secure their Bundesliga status.
From Relegation Battle to Comeback Kings: An Interview with Former Stuttgart Striker, Mario Gomez
Welcome back sports fans to another edition of “The Pitch.”
Today, we have a very special guest, a former VfB Stuttgart legend and one of the moast prolific strikers the Bundesliga has ever seen, Mario Gomez! Welcome Mario, it’s a pleasure to have you on the show.
Mario Gomez: Thanks for having me. It’s good to be here.
Let’s dive straight into the action. Stuttgart has been on a real rollercoaster ride this season, battling against relegation for much of it. But recent performances have been encouraging, especially the draw against Union Berlin and the comeback win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. What’s changed for the team from your perspective?
Mario gomez: I think the return of key players like Sasa Kalajdzic has been huge. You can see the difference he makes up front. He’s a natural goalscorer, and his presence alone seems to lift the entire team.
Moderator: Sven Mislintat, Stuttgart’s sporting director, said it himself: “No one wanted to hear that we missed Kalajdzic in the first half of the season.”
It’s clear how vital these players are. What would you say is the biggest reason for Stuttgart’s resurgence?
Mario gomez: I think it’s a combination of things. The return of key players is obviously huge, but you can also see a newfound belief in the team. They’re playing with more confidence, and they’re fighting for every point. This team knows how to dig deep and find a way to win,and that’s a valuable quality in this league.
Moderator: Now, looking at the Union Berlin game specifically – it was a tight affair, Union dominated possession for long periods, but stuttgart defended resolutely and ultimately secured a valuable point. Would you agree that Stuttgart’s defensive organization is finally starting to click?
Mario Gomez: Absolutely. Union Berlin is a very strong team, they have a lot of quality players, but Stuttgart showed great discipline defensively. They made it difficult for Union to create clear-cut chances, which is what you need to do in those crucial games.
Moderator: This leads us nicely into the next topic. Stuttgart now has the momentum on its side. They’ve climbed out of the relegation zone, the fans are behind them, and they have a challenging but winnable fixture against FC Augsburg next week. What are your expectations for Stuttgart in this crucial clash?
Mario Gomez: Augsburg will be tough, they’re fighting for their lives too. But I expect Stuttgart to go into that game with confidence. Kalajdzic mentioned wanting a packed stadium supporting them, and I think that will make a big difference. Stuttgart has the quality to win this game and build on the momentum they’ve gained.
Moderator: Absolutely! Kalajdzic clearly understands the importance of the fans and mentioned his hope for a packed stadium. How much of a difference can a passionate home crowd make, especially in a high-stakes game like this?
Mario gomez: It’s massive. When you have 60,000 fans roaring you on,it gives you that extra bit of energy, that extra push to go the extra mile. It can be intimidating for the opposition too. Home advantage is a real thing, and I’m sure Stuttgart’s fans will make the difference.
So, what’s your overall prediction for the rest of the season, Mario? Can Stuttgart escape the relegation battle and secure their Bundesliga status?
Mario Gomez: I think they can, definitely. They have the talent, they have the momentum, and now they have the belief. It won’t be easy, but I’m optimistic about their chances.
Let’s not forget, Stuttgart has a proud history. They’ve won Bundesliga titles, they’ve competed in the Champions League. There’s a lot of experience within this team, and they know what it takes to succeed.
