Russia’s first tennis player, Daniil Medvedev, and women’s top three, Aryna Sabalenkova of Belarus, have called for peace in Ukraine, which Russia attacked with Belarusian support two weeks ago.
“My message is still the same. I want peace around the world,” Medvedev said before the Indian Wells tournament began. “And I think every tennis player sees it the same way,” the 26-year-old Russian added.
The world number four Iga Šwiateková from Poland in California will perform with a ribbon in Ukrainian colors. The Grand Slam champion also encouraged others who would like to express their support with a symbolic gesture.
And Sabalenkova said according to Reuters that she was ready to wear a blue-yellow ribbon.
“I am really sad about how many people in Ukraine have lost their homes due to the war. Maybe there will be peace soon,” the Belarusian tennis player wished.
Medvedev and Sabalenko, like their other compatriots in Indian Wells, will present themselves under a neutral flag, as the WTA and ATP banned Russian and Belarusian officials from using state symbols after the invasion.
Both tennis organizations and the ITF also donated $ 700,000 (16 million crowns) to help Ukraine.
Tennis players have also come with support, such as former Russian world number one Maria Sharapova and Brit Andy Murray to help children affected by the invasion.
